Modeling and simulation (M&S) is a key to America’s global competitiveness in the 21st Century, and Old Dominion University is an international leader in this revolutionary new field. The concept is advancing manufacturing, changing health care, and creating ways to improve productivity and efficiency. In Hampton Roads alone, the economic value of modeling, simulation, and visualization-related business activity is estimated at over $500 million annually, and growing. It allows virtual testing of different scenarios from the structural viability of new products to the functional effectiveness of new methodologies. It moves products to market faster and with fewer faults, and it tests emergent processes quickly and inexpensively. It is a powerful learning tool for students at any level. And it also saves lives. ODU is the only university in the nation with an undergraduate degree in modeling and simulation, and has one of just three U.S. graduate programs in this emerging discipline.
RESEARCH - ODU’s Virginia Modeling Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC) was among the first to simulate real-life environments that cannot be modeled in any other way. Since 1997, the Center has been advancing sophisticated applications in defense, manufacturing, health care, education, transportation, real estate, information technology, and other area.
